State Tax-Free Weekend
The annual tax free weekend for South Carolina is Aug. 1-3. Computers, clothes, school supplies and a variety of other school-year essentials can be purchased free of sales tax during annual tax-free weekend, which runs from 12 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3. South Carolina shoppers bought more than $22.3 million in tax-free items during last year’s tax-free weekend.
Shoppers saved more than$1.3 million in sales tax. Tax-free items include computers, printers, school supplies, clothing and accessories, shoes and certain bed and bath items. These tax-free items can be new or used and are eligible regardless of price. Eligible items can be purchased online and in-store without paying the state’s six percent sales tax and local taxes. Hartley Powell, director
SCDOR, said the tax-free weekend offers some relief to save money, particularly on back-to-school essentials. Digital cameras, smartphones, jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets, watches and furniture are not exempt from sales tax during Tax-Free Weekend.
